Reflection: The Crucible Essay and First Day of School

Part One

The topic of the Crucible Essay is about the comparison of Elizabeth and a blanket. In this piece i was trying to figure out how I could find things that were alike and dislike for each. The main idea of this piece is that Elizabeth comforted her family and that is what a blanket symbolizes. During this essay i was focusing on writing in present tense and coming up with good metaphors and similes. The topic of My First Day of School is mainly a memoir of my most embarressing moment on the first day of school when my mom took pictures. During this i was concentrating on putting in some creative brushstrokes and adding detail in my writing.

Part Two

I revised my paper about Elizabeth by adding more information about her and telling why she is important to the theme of the play. I also fixed most of the problems i had with present tense. In my other piece i had to change some of my similes and label my brushstrokes.

Part Three
I think the most important things i have learned about writing is that you have to be creative and use fun comparisons that others will know about. Good similes and metaphors are good also.

First Day of School = Most Embarressing moment of my life.

Ever since we were little kids most of us always have to take back to school pictures. Well, this isn't considered the "coolest" thing to do, so usually people just take the picture then never mention them to anyone. This wasn't the case for me this year. This year's back to school picture was humiliating!
On this particular morning my mom and i were going to take Meredith, Cauley, and Catherine to school. After i had gotten ready and was fixing my lunch, the three of them walked in. I was praying my mom would forget about the pictures. Unfortunately this didn't happen. Right as we were walking out the door my mother remembered. As soon as she said those dreadful words,"School Pictures!" the humiliation spread across my face.
I could hear all three of my friends start giggling and egging it on. I knew I would neverlive this down. The first picture wasn’t too bad; all it had to be was a picture of all of us so I could handle it. I was hoping this would be the only picture. Like before, this wasn’t the case. My mother then proceeded to make me stand by myself and take another picture. Red-faced and humiliated, I stood there taking my picture. The laughing only got louder.
I think my mother was just enjoying my embarrassment because she then made me another picture! This was the worst of them all. Every year since i was a little kid my mom would make my brother and me take pictures and show how old we are by holding up our hands showing the number. I didn't think she would actually make me do this in front everyone but as luck would have it, she made me hold up ten fingers to show I was in the tenth grade and take the picture. By now the giggling turned into bursting out laughing. I’m even pretty sure I saw tears coming out of Cauley’s face she was laughing so hard. Apparently I'm the only kid who has to do this at my school so they felt they had to make fun of me.
I was made fun of all day to say the very least. Actually, I still get made fun of to this day. Cauley still draws me pictures of me holding up ten fingers. I don’t think I will ever live that day down. I hope that that was the worst back to school pictures I will ever have to take. From now on, I will make sure I do those pictures when I'm by myself.

Elizabeth vs. Blanket Essay

In the play The Crucible, one of the main characters is Elizabeth. She is the wife of John Proctor who had an affair with Abigail. Elizabeth and John have two children. When Elizabeth finds out about the affair she is bitter and cold toward John. IN the play Elizabeth is the one who stands behind John and lets him do what he thinks is right. Elizabeth is in the play because of the theme trust, she is one of the only examples of trusting others in the play.
Blankets are usually to comfort others. They also represent survival and security. Elizabeth is like a blanket because she comforts, is first cold, and after it's used to you it is warm.
Elizabeth is the mother of three children and is pregnant with the fourth. In order to be a good mother you have to be comforting. When everything is going down-hill she has to maintain a strong front so her children don't worry. John also comes to Elizabeth to answer his questions and she has to help him decide.
When you put a blanket over you it is usually cold at first. When John cheated on Elizabeth, like all wives, she was bitter. She was angry and did not trust John. In Act II she makes very cold comments toward John and you can tell she is very hostile. Most women today would divorce their husbands if they had an affair, but since it was not considered proper she had to make the best of it. Considering her situation I would be cold and harsh too.
When you sit for a long time with a blanket over you for a long time, you begin to be comfortable and warm. After three months Elizabeth begins to love and respect her husband, John, again. In Act IV you see John and Elizabeth talking and discussing what he should do. Even though she tells John that,"It is not her forgiveness to give," you can infer that she has already forgave John. She has to comfort John and let him know that he will be OK with any decision he goes with. When she is asked to convince John to confess his sin her response is,"He has his goodness now, God forbid I take it from him," this shows she is loving and she respects John for sticking up for what was right.
Overall Elizabeth is most like a blanket. She is comforting when she needs to be and she is bitter at first, then she respects and loves John at the end. I respect Elizabeth through this Play and she is my favorite character.
